Spring/The Champions

back to neighborhoods

North and Northwest Houston intrigues many newcomers because of the value and the variety of both new and older housing available. The area offers restful suburban/rural living as well as immense shopping, recreational, and cultural opportunities.

In the 1800s, Spring was a bustling railroad town. Today, the community offers a suburban quality of life for those who want to live near the city but yearn for a hometown feel. The community is home to one of the region’s most popular attractions, Old Town Spring, a quaint shopping area of restored buildings with stores that offer fine art, handmade gifts and crafts, woodworking, antiques, and clothing. Old Town Spring is the site of many annual festivals including the Heritage Festival in October and the Crawfish Festival in April.

Spring is also home to Splashtown, a 30-acre water theme park.

With residences that vary from 50s and 60s ranch-style homes to large two-story colonials, Spring combines the appeal of woodsy countryside with convenience to shopping, medical care, fine schools, and the Houston business community.

The Champions was the northwest’s first subdivision 25 years ago, and the area retains the name. Giving impetus to the area’s growth were Houston Intercontinental Airport and Beltway 8. The country lane known as FM 1960 has, over the last quarter century, become a bustling commercial thoroughfare.

Other subdivisions such as Olde Oaks and Champion Forest, with homes priced from the $100s to $1 million or more, followed The Champions. Northgate Forest, with prices starting at $400,000, is a neighborhood of custom homes. Much of the new home construction is attributable to the nearby location of Houston-based Compaq Computer Corporation.

Country clubs and golf courses abound in the Champions/1960 area, and shopping is excellent at nearby Willowbrook Mall and Greenspoint Mall.

North and northwest residents appreciate the present and future freeway improvements aimed at facilitating travel in this high-growth region. The completion of the Sam Houston Tollroad (Beltway 8), and improvements and upgrading to FM 1960, Interstate 45 North, and Highways 6 , 249, and 290 have opened up accessibility to the area.

But what residents truly enjoy is the safe, serene environment of The Champions.
